Making Money at 60 - A Guide To Mining In Silithus
I have seen alot of people talking about this recently in posts about getting money for an epic mount, but I really think it deserves its own thread, and maybe a sticky ;)
This is the best way to make money as a lvl 60 rogue and it is unique to our class, rogues truly are the best farming class, first we had pickpocket now we have this. You can get loads of arcane crystals, and some nice gems. It will be better in the next patch when gems are no longer obtainable from junkboxes, and the drop rate is going up for them in veins. Unfortunately they are also itemizing silithus, which will attract more people there, but it still won't change the fact that only rogues can do this.
Let me first describe the situation and why only our class can take advantage of it. Silithus (the most south western zone in Kalimdor) is where the silithid come from (think zerg). While they take many shapes and forms throughout southern Kalimdor, here they are between lvl 55 and lvl 60 elites. They are packed into underground hives that consist of winding tunnels, and in these tunnels are many ooze covered rich thorium veins. So you have lots of high level elite mobs in between you and the veins. As you can imagine stealth is very nice in getting to these veins, however it doesn't stop there. Sometimes there are mobs right next to veins, even scary lvl 60 elites that you have no chance of beating, but too bad for them we have stunlock. Thats right this rogue pvp tactic can help you mine while the mob just sits there and watches you. So only a stealth class can get to these veins easily, and for some veins only a class with many stuns/disorients can mine them.
Ok so only rogues can mine these, now let me describe the basic tactics in doing this. Remember that you are only there to mine, so if you can avoid it you don't even have to fight the mobs. Lots of times there are mines away from mobs, or they are patrolling. Mine in peace and then stealth away, or with a patrolling mob distract them when they are far away and then you can get two mines off before they start patrolling again (maximum of 4 mines per vein, so at most you would have to do this twice). If you have to fight, and you often do, then cheapshot and gouge them and then mine, then when you have 5 points kidney shot, then repeat gouging until the vein is empty and vanish. I have 2 points in improved gouge, which is very nice, but Im not sure if it is essential, if it is believe me it is worth the respec, although alot of people have this anyway. You can also use blind of course, but it is not neccessary and gets expensive. Also you will notice some neutral patrols that go around, these are social so don't attack something while they are nearby, just wait for them to pass. This is the basic formula, but I'll go over some specifics.
There are 3 hives within Silithus. Going in order of levels there is Hive Ashi in the north around lvl 55-56. These guys are easy, you can even kill them if you want, but its not worth it because it takes too long. Only guys to watch out for is the defenders because they disarm, I use a weapon chain to avoid this problem (also nice in pvp).
To the south west there is Hive Zora. These guys are lvl 57-58 and can be killed if you use preperation, but they are definately not worth it. The Reavers have a knockdown, but it isn't too bad. The ones to watch out for are the Hive Sisters, they will lay eggs that hatch quickly if you don't kill them. Also there are a special sort of mob here, the wasp swarms. These guys are only in certain rooms and they are linked spawns. Generally if I see a vein near them I try to see if I can distract them when they are away from it, otherwise I ignore it. If you really want to get it take it slow, kill them one at a time (kill one and then vanish and start eating or the poison will kill you) and it will take a long time to do it.
To the south east is Hive Regal. They are lvl 59-60 and cannot be killed. Well to be honest I never tried and I don't plan on doing it anytime soon. The Spitfires are surprisingly easy, if they are at range and you time it right you can mine in between their attack, still helps to gouge though. The others are all bad. The Hive Lords have a really bad knockback, the Ambushers have a 30 second dot, and the Slavemakers have a 2 minute dot disease. You can take them all, just be careful and be aware of their effects, once you die a few times you should have learned how to deal with them and can mine here relatively safely.
Ok thats pretty much it, to wrap it up I'll give some talent suggestions for this. I have something similar to Osiris's build, 21/4/26. The talents which are nice for this are:
1-3 impr gouge: I'm not sure exactly how many you need, with some fast attacking enemies I barely get my mine off with 2, with others its no problem, test it out yourself and if you need to get this I would highly suggest it as the money you bring in will easily cover the cost, and its also a great talent.
MOD: You're sneaking around lvl 60 elites in a small tunnel, not essential, but very handy.
Camouflage: You will be in stealth ALOT, moving fast is always nice.
Elusiveness: You have to use vanish alot, sometimes you will use evasion/blind. This will make your mining go quicker, but not essential.
Preparation: Having the ability to vanish, blind, evade or sprint twice in a short period of time WILL save your life. Not essential, but it is a long walk from the graveyard.
If any other Silithus miners have some suggestions feel free to post and I'll add them to this guide.
You don't need improved gouge. In my last respec, I got cold blood and hemo... so I didn't have the points left over to get improved gouge. (only 58, so I'll have 2 points in it when I get around to leveling)
Non-improved gouge is long enough, as is cheapshot. I tend to cheapshot/mine, gouge/mine, sinister for a combo, then KS/mine. By then, gouge should be refreshed. Bring some blinding powder because you will miss now and then.
Being 60 is huge for this. I can mine very effectively at the easy mine, but the other two can give me problems. Lower agro range is very important.
Personally, I would like to see this thread hidden permanently - because you KNOW blizzard is going to make the bugs see invis when they realize whats happenning. We aren't really cheating, but Im sure they didn't plan for rogues to be able to do this.
I might bring my druid in once he gets 60 and try with him. He has no vanish, so I would basically just kill things. Hes only 54 now, but will probably hit 60 before my rogue.

Really the only place I had problems with it was in hive regal, I think it was the ambushers...or the hive lords, because they have a really fast attack speed and will interupt as soon as the gouge is gone.

If that happens it will happen regardless of whether there is a guide on the worldofwar.net rogue forums, honestly this is too good a thing to not take advantage of, if nothing else we should try to get the word out before the fix then.

I really doubt this will work because you can only kill bugs in the first, maybe the second hive, and stunlock is much more efficient.

It wouldn't be fast or pretty, but nothing is as a druid. You'd be surprised how good they are at soloing single mobs. I think my best feat was taking a few +3 elites (I think they were a tad weak for their level elite though) Pretty much opposite strategy for soloing things as a rogue. Rogues kill things fast but can't take damage. Druids kill things rediculously slow, but noone can stay alive longer.
I was more thinking of it as something to do than to make money. Im betting the bugs will have some pretty nice loot also, considering their levels. Mabye not instance loot, since there aren't bosses... but they gotta have nice world drops. (after the patch, I mean)
if the area is gonna get more popular wont it be hypothetical that many lvl 56-60 groups will be in the mines themselves and thus be clearing the mine out alot?
Thus freeing anyone who wanted to to take mining materials.
Mining is a good ay to mke money but when stealthing it and building ure entire build around it isnt exactly easy.and think of the competition if rogues where good at this then because rogues are "two a penny" then you woulnt get more than a few mines in every area from the competition. Add in the obvious danger element wouldnt be easy just to farm instances? or mine outside?
I was there last night..the first time ever..
got scared to death by 59-60+ elite bugs..so I didnt go mining there, but more like exploring..
I think I'm gonna farm there later, because right now I cant sell anything in AH at all, got about 200 thorium, bar 4 arcanite, 7 blue sapphire, 6 large opal, 2 huge emerald and a **** load of dense stone..
Can anyone tell me what are the reasonable price of all these above in a "economically developed" server?
I play in EU and the server is so new, that I struggle to sell 20 thorium for 5g...-_- and blue sapphire for 7g, but no one buys...

I doubt that anyone would ever group up to mine there, it is incredibly inefficient. And even with loot there is little reason to go there, I mean there are elite mobs all over the world, but no one kills them because they are too much trouble. One time I actually saw a lvl 60 pally and 60 warrior trying to mine and it was funny to watch. They were mining a vein which I would have just unstealthed next to and mined, then re stealthed. They had to clear out two lvl 57 elites before they could get to it, and that was a mine on the surface.
Also you don't have to make a build based on this, I happened to have all those talents for pvp and they are also useful mining, of course you can do it without them as well, only one I wasn't sure about was gouge and alansirhc said you don't need it.
In terms of well if every rogue can do this then it wont be good money...well anywhere else EVERYONE can mine, this cuts down from 8 classes to 1 class that can do it. And beyond that you need mining as a tradeskill which some rogues don't have. During nearly two months of mining there I have seen 1 horde rogue and seen a couple of high lvl alliance rogues in /who. So yeah other people go mining there, but it is still very restricted and profitable.

Mith seems to sell more than thorium on my server. I sold 167 thorium for 15g last night. Hoping to offload my 133 dense stone for 5g soon. Im too lazy to put that much junk on the AH, so I just put it in the trade channel now and then. Average price on thorium seems to hover around 2.5g a stack, so I lost out a little I guess.
I think I got 36g for my two azerothian diamonds, which isn't horrible. Sold 4 arcane crystals to a guildie for a 100g IOU that Im really hoping hes good for. They average around 28-30 I think.
If a rogue started on one of the brand new servers and leveled fast, I bet ya could make a killing in sith. Prices deflate fast within a few months, apparently.
Actually the prices of crystals have only gone up on my server. At first no one needs arcane crystals much, but later on loads of people have money and want their shiny blue crafted weapon so they start needing lots of arcane crystals.
When I started selling crystals they went for about 15g each, now they are around 30g each.
Opposite is true of thorium though, at first all the blacksmiths need to skill up so they need lots of it, later on there is little need of it in the higher end blacksmithing so it goes for only 3g a stack on my server.
